There's a theory that three examples of anything equals a trend. If that's the case, then I'd like to suggest that we are entering an era of intellectual pornography. You've probably read elsewhere that 21st century consumers have become blasés about porn, which has lost its power to shock. So it's perhaps inevitable that pornography has cleaned up its act and become something that fashionable people can enjoy.

I got the first inkling of this when I read a survey in ­Esquire magazine (which is not a porn magazine, by the way) of the world's best media. It recommended a website called nerve.com, which it described as having « the mind of the New Yorker and the body of Playboy ». The site offers erotic photography and occasionally witty articles about sex, culture and relationships, although its design lacks glamour. More recently, I stumbled across an article about a British magazine called Scarlet, which features literary erotica for women. Its sales have increased following a viral advertising campaign that involved leaving fake love letters in pubs.

Finally, a trend-tracking pal of mine mentioned a site called Box Magazine (www.box- mag.com). This also is a mixture of articles about sex (films, toys and tips), photography (both erotic and other­wise), and alternative culture. It's a bit like an underground fashion magazine, pushed a little further. Go and have a look, if you like. Like I said, there's nothing to be ashamed of.
